How to Move from Replit to Cursor or Claude Code (Full Migration Guide)

Replit is where millions of developers write their first line of code. Its zero-setup, browser-based environment and built-in AI agent make it unbeatable for learning and quick experiments. But when you're building something that needs real infrastructure, production deployments, or serious AI coding assistance, it's time to graduate.

This guide covers migrating from Replit to either Cursor (AI-enhanced VS Code IDE) or Claude Code (terminal-native agentic AI) — the two most popular destinations in 2026.

Why Developers Leave Replit

    • Slow performance: Replit's cloud containers are noticeably slower than local development
    • Expensive at scale: Replit's hosting costs climb quickly for real traffic
    • Limited AI depth: Replit AI doesn't match Claude Code or Cursor's multi-file reasoning
    • Vendor lock-in: Your project runs on Replit's infrastructure, not yours
    • Deployment restrictions: Custom domains, server configurations, and containerisation are limited

Step 1: Export Your Replit Project

Option A — GitHub (preferred):

    • In your Repl, click the Git icon in the left sidebar
    • Click Create a Git Repo → Connect to GitHub
    • Push all commits
    • Clone locally: git clone https://github.com/your-username/your-repl.git

Option B — Download ZIP:

    • In the Files sidebar, click the three-dot menu
    • Select Download as ZIP
    • Extract and open the folder locally

Important: Note your Replit Secrets (Settings → Secrets) — you'll need to recreate these as a local .env file.

Step 2: What Replit Provides That You Now Own

Replit providesWhat you need locally
Database (Replit DB)Migrate to Supabase, PlanetScale, or local PostgreSQL
Environment secretsLocal .env file + hosting platform env vars
Always-on serverDeploy to Railway, Render, Fly.io, or Vercel
Object storageUse Cloudflare R2, AWS S3, or Supabase Storage
Auth (if using Replit Auth)Migrate to Clerk, Auth0, or Supabase Auth

Step 3A: Setting Up Cursor (VS Code-Based IDE)

Choose Cursor if you want a familiar visual IDE experience with AI built in.

    • Download Cursor at cursor.sh
    • Open your cloned project: File → Open Folder
    • Install dependencies via the built-in terminal (Ctrl + `): run npm install or pip install -r requirements.txt

Create your environment file and add all Replit Secrets to it:

touch .env

Add all keys from Replit Secrets panel here

Configure Cursor with .cursorrules:

# .cursorrules

This project was migrated from Replit. Stack: Node.js + Express (or your stack) Do not suggest Replit-specific packages or APIs. Prefer Railway or Render for deployment suggestions.

Step 3B: Setting Up Claude Code (Terminal-Native)

Choose Claude Code if you prefer terminal-native work and want the most powerful autonomous coding agent.

# Install

npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code

Navigate to your project

cd your-repl-project

Launch

claude

Authenticate with your Anthropic API key when prompted. Then give Claude Code context:

> This project was built in Replit. It is a Node.js Express API.

Read the entire codebase. Note any Replit-specific dependencies (replit-storage, replit-auth, etc.) and flag them — we'll replace them.

Step 4: Replace Replit-Specific Dependencies

@replit/database → Supabase:

# Find all usages

grep -r "@replit/database" src/

Ask Cursor/Claude Code:

"Replace all @replit/database calls with equivalent Supabase operations."

replit-auth → Clerk or Supabase Auth:

"Migrate all Replit Auth middleware and session handling to Clerk.

Install the @clerk/nextjs package and update all protected routes."

Find all built-in Replit env vars to replace:

grep -r "REPLIT_" src/ --include=".ts" --include=".js"

Step 5: Set Up a Local Database

If you used Replit DB (key-value store), migrate to a proper database. The simplest path:

Supabase (free tier, PostgreSQL):

    • Create a project at supabase.com
    • Get connection string: Project Settings → Database → Connection String
    • Ask Cursor: "Convert our Replit DB key-value data model to a PostgreSQL schema using Prisma"

Step 6: Deploy to a Real Host

For Node.js/Python APIs:

    • Railway ($5/month) — closest to Replit's simplicity, GitHub-connected auto-deploy
    • Render (free tier) — similar simplicity, slightly slower cold starts
    • Fly.io — more control, runs Docker containers globally

For React frontends:

    • Vercel — best-in-class for React/Next.js, generous free tier
    • Netlify — solid alternative with form handling built in

Cursor vs Claude Code: Which Should You Choose?

CursorClaude Code
InterfaceVisual IDE (VS Code fork)Terminal CLI
Best forDevelopers who like visual toolsPower users, DevOps, backend work
Multi-file editsYes (Composer)Yes (autonomous agents)
Shell commandsVia terminal paneNative — executes commands directly
Price$20/monthPay per token (Anthropic API)
Learning curveLow (familiar IDE)Medium (terminal-first)

Recommendation: Start with Cursor if you're coming from Replit's visual environment. Move to Claude Code later for autonomous, long-running tasks.
